As Longhorns star Sam Cozart has frustrated hitters on the mound, he is starting to make national headlines. On Wednesday, the North Carolina native was named to the midseason watch list for the Stopper of the Year Award. He is one of the four freshman that made the cut, joining West Virginia's David Perez, Portland's Alex Via, and Kent State's Peyton Williams.
In 13 appearances this season, Cozart has posted a 1.83 and struck out 49 batters. During his first season as a Longhorn, he has split time between the bullpen and the rotation, thriving in either role. The Wesleyan Christian High Alum currently has six saves, which is tied for the most among Power Four true freshmen.
What has stood out the most about Cozart's play is his ability to limit baserunners. Currently, opponents are only hitting .104 against the talented right-hander. When they have reached, Cozart has done a great job of getting out of jams and preserving leads.
When it comes to the Stopper of the Year Award, Texas has had a lot of success. They have won the award more than any school in the country. The list of alumni who have won it includes Chance Ruffin, who won it in 2010, and Corey Knebel, who won it in 2011.
While Cozart is focused on helping Texas make a deep playoff run, he will also be keeping an eye on how voting plays out. The winner will be announced in a few months on June 12th at the 2026 Men's College World Series.
