Manchester United unlikely to beat Liverpool to Micky van de Ven signing
Manchester United have reportedly accepted that they are unlikely to win the race for Micky van de Ven, with the club believing the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back will opt for Liverpool if both sides make formal offers this summer.
Van de Ven, who joined Tottenham in a £43 million deal from Wolfsburg in 2023, is currently involved in a relegation battle as Spurs fight to retain their Premier League status.
Despite the turmoil at the north London club, the Dutch defender has remained one of the standout performers in the division, and his reputation has not diminished despite the chaos around him.
United have been credited with a strong interest in Van de Ven as they seek to address their fragile defence, with club legend Peter Schmeichel wondering how his former side did not pursue a move for the ‘fantastic’ Dutchman earlier.

The Red Devils are prioritising a high-quality, left-footed centre-back to provide competition for Lisandro Martinez, following a campaign in which injuries severely hampered their defensive stability.
However, according to the Manchester Evening News, Van de Ven would prefer Liverpool to Manchester United should he leave Tottenham.
Liverpool are understood to be keen on bringing Van de Ven to Anfield this summer, identifying him as a prime candidate to eventually succeed Virgil van Dijk.
His explosive pace, composure on the ball, and commanding presence align well with Arne Slot’s preferred style.
Notably, Slot previously attempted to sign Van de Ven twice, at AZ and Feyenoord, before Tottenham ultimately secured his signature from Wolfsburg.
Van de Ven would reportedly remain open to a move to Old Trafford if Liverpool do not make a formal offer, recognising that United are a club in a positive moment under ambitious new leadership.
However, United would face an uphill battle if Liverpool were to commit fully to the pursuit.
Tottenham are expected to demand between £60 million and £80 million for Van de Ven. Whether Spurs’ financial position ultimately forces a negotiation remains to be seen, but with Liverpool holding the advantage regarding the player’s preference, United may already be bracing for disappointment.
