Mariners 7, Twins1
Joe Ryan rebounded from a difficult start at Citi Field in New York in which he allowed seven runs — four earned — in five innings against the Mets with a solid outing against the Mariners (15-16).
Ryan was much better on Tuesday, limiting Seattle to two runs in his outing, which lasted into the seventh inning. The starter gave up one run in the sixth — a Josh Naylor single which tied the game at 1-1 after Byron Buxton had homered in the bottom of the fifth — and left with a runner on base in the seventh, which came around to score.
After Ryan, the Twins’ bullpen gave up three runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth as it spiraled away.
Naylor finished the day with three hits and four runs driven in, helping carry his team to its second-consecutive victory over the Twins (13-16).
After tying the game earlier, Naylor took a pitch at the top of the zone from Cole Sands and drove it out of the park in the eighth. That three-run homer took the Mariners’ lead from one to four as they firmly seized control of the game.
His teammate, Julio Rodríguez, had three doubles in the game, drove in a pair of runs and scored two.
After seeing their lead slip away an inning earlier, the Twins fell behind in the seventh. Randy Arozarena, who doubled off Ryan to lead off the inning, came home to score when Cole Young sent a two-out single off reliever Kody Funderburk to left field. The Mariners never looked back.
The final score was Mariners 7, Twins 1.
