Dodgers arenât cashing in scoring chances, and arenât creating them either
Dodgers' offensive woes continue as they fail to score runs and capitalize on chances.
The Dallas Cowboys are redefining roles for rookie defensive ends Malachi Lawrence, Jaishawn Barham, and LT Overton under Christian Parker's new defensive scheme. Each rookie brings unique strengths and responsibilities as they adapt to their positions in the upcoming season.
Not all defensive ends are created equal, and that couldnât be more true than those currently rostered on the Dallas Cowboys. From veterans to rookies, defensive ends are like apples and oranges in 2026. Christian Parkerâs shift to odd-man fronts means the Cowboys could have anywhere from three to five guys lining up on-ball on any given down.
Parker's diverse fronts mean his defensive ends will hold diverse roles and responsibilities. Three of Dallasâ rookies, rookies who identified as ends in college, couldnât be more different from one another on the Cowboysâ defense. Their distinction is worth discussing because their expectations are tied to their roles.
Malachi Lawrence, Jaishawn Barham and LT Overton were all listed as either edge or defensive end in their draft profiles. Their strengths, weaknesses and size all vary, and as such, so will their roles in Dallas this coming season. While thereâs plenty of wiggle room to adjust these roles as their careers progress, itâs fairly clear as to what roles theyâll serve in Year 1.
Lawrence, the first of the three players drafted, has pretty clear roles and expectations in front of him this year. Drafted to be a pass-rusher first and foremost, Lawrence is an edge player in the traditional sense. Playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 look, heâs likely to take on a role resembling that of DeMarcus Wareâs many moons ago.
At 6-foot-4, 253 pounds, Lawrence is large enough to man defensive end in a traditional four-man front but lean enough to be standing in a wide 3-4 front. Lawrence will largely be judged on his ability to pressure the passer so look for him to man the edge regardless of front in 2026.
Barham, drafted in the third round, is an off-ball linebacker, turned on-ball edge, turned back off-ball linebacker in Dallas. Parker wants to use him as an inside linebacker in his system this year but doesnât plan to completely strip him of pass-rushing opportunities.
The Cowboys' rookie defensive ends will have diverse roles based on their individual strengths and the team's new defensive scheme under Christian Parker.
The three rookie rushers are Malachi Lawrence, Jaishawn Barham, and LT Overton, each with different strengths and draft profiles as edge or defensive ends.
Christian Parker's shift to odd-man fronts allows for flexibility in defensive alignments, potentially utilizing three to five players on-ball at any time.
Fans can expect the rookies to adapt to their specific roles, with their performance influenced by their unique skill sets and the team's evolving defensive strategy.

At 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Barham has the ability to play a variety of roles, but it appears Plan A is as traditional linebacker who will blitz. If all else fails, he could eventually join Lawrence full-time as an edge rusher, but that's unlikely to happen in 2026.
Overton is by far the least explosive of three, but he has size and length that canât be taught. At 274 pounds and an 81-inch wingspan, Overton is a part defensive tackle and part defensive end. And with a frame that potentially allows extra mass, Overton could even bulk up without damaging his speed or movement.
Overton is likely to play defensive end in 3-4 personnel (4i and 5-tech). Itâs the same position Quinnen Williams is slated for and should provide more run stopping responsibility than pass-rush opportunity for the rookie. Itâs possible he could take snaps as a 3-tech defensive tackle in four-man fronts, but since that would steal opportunities from the aforementioned Williams, that may not be optimal.
