The unfortunate reality of Major League Baseball is that skippers around the league have to win if they want to keep their jobs.
Whether that's unfair or not, despite all the other factors, is one thing, but it's just the reality of being a head man at the highest level. For New York Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, he's certainly someone who needs to be careful.
Mendoza hasn't done the worst job in Queens, but the Mets have spent a lot of money on this roster and have been expected to win at a very high level. That simply hasn't been the case, so if this continues over the next week or so, I'd expect talks to start ramping up about his future.
Despite my belief, others don't think that will be the case in the immediate future. However, it seems like a given that it would be a conversation at some point.
“It is still only April, just 17 games into the season. Firing a manager this early would be overly emotional. Mendoza must lead the Mets out of this hole, and if he does, all will be forgotten. But if the same struggles continue, this conversation may be revisited,” Thomas Kelson of SI wrote.
Sitting at 7-11 after another loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, they're on a seven-game losing streak. To say the start of the season has been ugly would be an understatement right now, and Mendoza unfortunately could face the problems that come with that.
Carlos Mendoza is facing scrutiny due to the Mets' poor performance despite a high payroll and expectations for success.
In MLB, a manager's job security is primarily influenced by the team's performance and the need to win games to justify their position.
The Mets were expected to perform at a high level this season due to significant financial investments in their roster.
