Dodgers arenāt cashing in scoring chances, and arenāt creating them either
Dodgers' offensive woes continue as they fail to score runs and capitalize on chances.
The author visited the Quad City River Bandits in Davenport, Iowa, for a Mother's Day game. The experience included great seats, a welcoming atmosphere, and a chance to see top Class A prospects from the Royals.

Every year we try to take in a few minor league games around the Midwest. The stadiums are intimate and comfortable. The food and drink selections are solid, and the ticket prices are unbeatable. Plus, it gives me a chance to look over some future talent.
This Motherās Day, we made a trip to Davenport, Iowa, to take in a game with the Quad City River Bandits in their wonderful ballpark. Each Motherās Day, I take my wife on a surprise trip somewhere in the state of Iowa to visit an attraction weāve never seen before. During the walk up to the stadium, she thought we were going to an amusement park. Modern Woodmen Park, home of the Bandits, has an assortment of rides in the left-field corner. Thereās a small roller coaster, a mini train, an old-fashioned horse carousel, and the main attraction, a Ferris wheel. More on this later.
Walking into the park, a club official met us at the top of the stairs, welcomed us to the park, and thanked us for attending. That was a nice touch. We had great seats, just nine rows behind the Bandits dugout, which gave us a nice view of the Mississippi River, the majestic Centennial Bridge, and the Ferris wheel. It almost makes you forget youāre there for a game.
Iād been looking forward to seeing some of the Royalsā top Class A prospects. Austin Charles, Luke Pelzer, and Ramon Ramirez have been hitting the ball well, and of course thereās the number one pick, Blake Mitchell, to look over.
The Bandits started righty Aiden Jimenez, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft. Young Mr. Jimenez ran into trouble almost immediately, giving up a single, hitting a batter, then walking the lava-hot Jaime Ferrer to load the bases with just one out. Jimenez induced a ground ball to first baseman Derlin Figueroa, who stepped on the bag and made a nice throw to Mitchell for the tag and inning-ending double play.
The Cedar Rapids Kernels (Twins) battered Jimenez for three innings before he was mercifully pulled. Final line: 3.2 innings, five runs on just five hits. The problem was that three of the five hits were of the long-ball variety. The Kernels hit back-to-back solo bombs in the second before adding three more in the third, all coming on a no-doubt blast by Ferrer, who had three home runs in the series. This shot was one of those where the outfielders didnāt even move. You could tell by the sound it made that it was gone. Indeed, the ball struck a billboard behind the berm in left field. A couple feet higher and it would have landed on the Ferris wheel plaza. Iām guessing that ball traveled about 450 feet.
After three innings, the only highlight for the Bandits was Luke Pelzer, a scrappy outfielder who was a 17th-round pick in 2025 out of the University of Illinois. He had a single, then stole second and third on consecutive pitches. I liked what I saw from him. He ended up with two hits in four at-bats on the day. Cedar Rapids pitcher looked like the real deal, throwing 3.2 shutout innings with seven strikeouts.
Modern Woodmen Park is known for its intimate setting, food and drink selections, and attractions like a Ferris wheel and rides.
Top prospects include Austin Charles, Luke Pelzer, Ramon Ramirez, and number one pick Blake Mitchell.

With Hill out, the Bandits finally came alive in the fifth, plating four runs. Nolan Sailors led off with a single. Mitchell drew a walk. Ramon Ramirez, whoās hitting .305 on the year, mashed a home run to dead center. Pelzer doubled, then came home on a Charles sac fly. Now weāve got a game. The Bandits tied it in the sixth when Erick Torres led off with a double, moved to third on a fielderās choice, and scored on a Mitchell sacrifice fly. That was the only contact Mitchell made in five plate appearances.
The Kernels put the game away with two in the eighth inning, coming on a Brandon Winokur home run, and three more in the ninth on a Rayne Doncon dong, his second of the day. Final score: Cedar Rapids 10, Quad Cities 5.
What about the baby Royals? One game is such an incredibly small sample size that itās impossible to make long-term predictions, but thatās never stopped me.
They have a second baseman, Tyriq Kemp, who hails from the Netherlands. KC had another player a few years back, Darryl Collins, who was from the Netherlands. Seems like the Royals canāt figure out how to make first-round draft choices, but theyāve got the Netherlands market cornered.
About that number one pick: Mitchell has the body and the look of a ballplayer. His work behind the plate was adequate, but that bat? Woof. He ended the day 0-for-3 with one walk and three strikeouts. Heās hitting below his weight, currently sitting at an even .200. Who knows? Heās young, and maybe he eventually figures out how to make more contact. Or not. Everyone connected in some way to the Royals wishes for Mitchell to be the next Royals star. Thatās a given. Right now, he looks like a kid who wouldāve been better off playing three or four years of college ball.
The Royals, as noted on these pages many times before, aside from Bobby Witt Jr., have had an abysmal record with their first-round choices over the last decade. Itās almost statistically impossible to be that bad with first-round picks. I understand that baseball is probably the hardest sport to scout. I couldnāt do it, yet it seems our professional scouts canāt either. Either way, it looks to me like the catcher of the future is Ramon Ramirez. Heās got a catcherās build, plus he can handle the bat. Heās hitting .305 for the season and has enough track record to show itās not a fluke. Plus, heās almost a year younger than Mitchell.
Austin Charles is a prospect. Heās huge for a shortstop at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, and heāll probably put on another 15-20 pounds as he matures and gets his man strength. The problem is that the Royals hopefully wonāt need another shortstop in the next ten years, which leaves Charles without a position. If I were in the organization, Iād immediately move him to one of the corner outfield spots. He looks athletic enough to handle the change of scenery. Heās hitting .311 for the season. Keep an eye on him.
The other guy who impressed me was Pelzer. Heās only 5-foot-10 but a solid 195 pounds. He has decent speed and is hitting .303 this season. Iād make the bet weāll see him in Kansas City before Gavin Cross. Pelzer is already 23, and if he continues to play well, the Royals need to get him to Northwest Arkansas this summer. I see no reason to have a 23-year-old with college experience wasting away in Single-A.
The Bandits rolled through five pitchers in this game, and the only one who really showed me anything was a lefty named Mason Miller. He went 2.2 innings, gave up just one hit, and struck out three. He also walked three. If he ended up being half as good as the other Mason Miller, Iād be overjoyed.
If youāre in the Quad Cities area, make plans to see a game at this ballpark. Itās a jewel. Thereās plenty of parking nearby, and thereās a nice strip of bars and restaurants just a short walk away. If youāve got small children, theyāll love it. We took a ride on the Ferris wheel late in the game, which was one of the more unusual baseball experiences of my life. Minor league baseball remains one of the great sporting values.
