The San Diego Padres are expected to trade for a $56 million Cy Young winner to strengthen their injury-prone starting rotation, particularly after losing Nick Pivetta to a flexor strain. The team aims to stabilize its pitching staff as they approach full strength.

The San Diego Padres knew coming into the season that the starting rotation would be a key factor in how the year began. However, injuries have made it difficult to manage at times. One recent setback was the injury to starter Nick Pivetta.
“Nick Pivetta will be sidelined "weeks and maybe months" after an MRI revealed a flexor strain in his right elbow, San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen told reporters Wednesday. The team already had placed Pivetta on the injured list Tuesday, and while the hope is that he won't need surgery, the veteran right-hander will be sidelined well beyond the mandated 15 days,” ESPN wrote.
Now, it seems like the Padres are close to getting back to full strength in the rotation.
“The Padres have weathered their shaky early-season rotation to conclude April with a strong 19-11 record. Their starting pitching group should improve within the next couple weeks, which could lead to some decisions for the front office,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco wrote.
The specific Cy Young winner targeted by the Padres has not been disclosed in the article.
Nick Pivetta is sidelined due to a flexor strain in his right elbow and could be out for weeks or possibly months.
Injuries have significantly impacted the Padres' starting rotation, making it challenging for the team to manage their pitching staff effectively.

The Padres getting healthy is a positive development, but there is never a guarantee that it will last. Because of that, San Diego could look to add a big arm at the trade deadline. One name to watch is Miami Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara.
“If the Marlins fall by the wayside as expected, though, it's less a question of "if" Alcantara gets traded and more a question of "where." Surely, there will be no shortage of interested parties, but look for San Diego's A.J. Preller to work his deadline magic once again. The Padres' current farm system is pretty much unanimously regarded as the MLB's weakest, considering all the prospects they've given up in big trades over the past few years,” Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller wrote.
Adding an arm like Alcantara, who has been strong so far this season, would be a major boost for the club. Alcantara is a reliable starter who takes the ball every fifth day and has proven success throughout his career.
Last season was a difficult one for the right-hander as he returned from injury. Alcantara is on a $56 million deal with the Marlins. It would be significant for the Padres to part with some prospects in order to land a talent like Alcantara.
