Even for fans who don't follow the NFL all that closely, they know that New England picking up the fifth-year option of Christian Gonzalez's contract is a no-brainer of a decision.
The former Oregon Duck cornerback has established himself as one of the best in the league, and according to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have rewarded Gonzalez by picking up the fifth year of his initial rookie contract as he enters the fourth season of his career.
In the three seasons with the Patriots, Gonzalez has started in 34 games. He missed most of his rookie season in 2023 due to an injury, and he played in just four contests. But in the two years since, he has dominated with 145 tackles, 118 solo, and three interceptions. Gonzalez was also voted to his first of probably many Pro Bowls last season as well.
He is currently playing on his initial four-year, $15.1-million rookie deal, with a 2026 cap hit of $4.8 million. But with this extension, Gonzalez will cash in $18.1-million for the 2027 season alone.
For those who watched Super Bowl LX, they know the score would have been more lopsided without Gonzalez's efforts in the secondary. He had multiple pass breakups, including one that saved a touchdown early in the game. If the Patriots somehow won that game, Gonzalez would have been in major consideration for the Most Valuable Player award. Instead, the Seahawks came away with the 29-13 victory.
Although he played for just one season as a Duck in Eugene, Gonzalez certainly made a lasting impression. He's making that same impression on the next level.
Exercising the fifth-year option means the Patriots have committed to keeping Gonzalez on the team for the 2027 season, ensuring his continued presence in their defense.
In his three seasons, Gonzalez has started 34 games, recorded 145 tackles, 118 solo tackles, and three interceptions, and was selected for his first Pro Bowl last season.
With the fifth-year option, Gonzalez's contract will result in a cap hit of $4.8 million for 2026 and $18.1 million for the 2027 season.
