The Boston Red Sox are struggling in last place in the American League East after failing to add a power bat in the offseason. Analysts believe their decision to let Alex Bregman walk in free agency, along with trading Rafael Devers, has significantly impacted their performance.

As things currently stand, the Boston Red Sox have been one of the more below-average teams in Major League Baseball. Currently in last place in the American League East, it feels like Boston didn't do enough during its offseason to put itself in a position to win.
That's just the harsh reality of what happened, and one analyst believes that it was due to a simple reason. The belief here is that the Red Sox won't play as well as they should because they didn't add a power bat in the offseason.
âBoston Red Sox: Not adding power bat. It felt like the Boston Red Sox lacked power in 2025, particularly after trading Rafael Devers away. They then proceeded to let Alex Bregman, the player who ranked third on the team in home runs despite missing substantial time due to injury, walk in free agency, and replace him with Willson Contreras as their big bat,â Zachary Rotman of FanSided wrote.
It was rather obvious that when the Red Sox let Alex Bregman walk, it wouldn't work out the way they were hoping. Not only did they let Bregman walk, but they traded Rafael Devers a year before that because of the situation with Bregman.
So, as we look at what Boston has done in the past year or so, it traded one of the best power hitters in baseball and another one of the best hitters in the game. That's certainly not the recipe for success.
The Red Sox let Alex Bregman walk in free agency as part of their offseason strategy, which analysts believe was a mistake.
The Red Sox's lack of offseason moves, particularly not adding a power bat, has contributed to their below-average performance and last-place standing.
Trading Rafael Devers before letting Bregman walk has been viewed as a significant factor in the Red Sox's struggles this season.
