BIG3 to make two stops in Detroit this summer
BIG3 basketball league returns to Detroit with two games this summer!
Reign St. Clair, a sophomore quarterback at Upper Arlington, is competing for the starting job after transferring from Bellefontaine. He aims to enhance his skills and visibility in a more competitive environment.
Asked about the best attributes of Upper Arlington football after his first few months in the program, Reign St. Clair cited the level of competition.
Coming off a sophomore season in which he threw for nearly 2,000 yards at Bellefontaine, the 6-foot-3, 220-pound St. Clair finds himself in a battle for the UA starting quarterback job with classmate Charlie Hunt, and the two flanked one another while flashing their skills throughout the Golden Bears’ college football showcase May 5.
“Really [the move was just about] being competitive, getting into a bigger school, bigger area and playing better competition, making myself better for the future,” St. Clair said. “It’s a big year for me. I went to Elite 11 [and] Rivals [camps] and I’m going to the Under Armour Next camp next weekend. I am just trying to get my name out there.”

The younger brother of Ohio State quarterback Tavien St. Clair, Reign hopes to build on a resume that includes offers from Eastern Kentucky and South Florida. He threw for 1,999 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall, completing 64.2% of his throws for a Bellefontaine offense that amassed 66.9% of its yards in the air.

St. Clair also punted 27 times for 858 yards, an average of 31.8 per attempt.
He and his family moved to central Ohio in January, and UA coach Justin Buttermore said St. Clair is eligible to play the entire season this fall.
The 6-2, 190-pound Hunt has his own designs on starting after spending last fall as Luke Backes’ backup. Hunt played mostly safety the final two-thirds of the season, in which UA went 10-3 and lost to Pickerington Central 17-16 in a Division I, Region 3 semifinal.
“Competition is great. Iron sharpens iron,” Hunt said. “I think my strengths are my athleticism and arm strength. I know I’m a pretty smart guy. I like to think I know our offense well.”

Buttermore said Hunt and St. Clair complement each other.
“They are good at different things,” Buttermore said. “That’s just part of it in high school. You don’t recruit to the style you run. You deal with the kids in your program. To have two kids that offer different skills and are both really good players, that’s good for us. It’s good to have choices.”
St. Clair said he is improving at reading defenses and staying calm under pressure, both things he has learned to some extent from his brother.
“We didn’t have a huge offensive line [at Bellefontaine], so for [my brother] to stay calm, deliver throws and make things work was something special,” St. Clair said. “Something that is different, though, is reading defenses. Tavien learned a lot more about doing that at Ohio State, so reading defenses and learning from him has been huge for me.”
Upper Arlington quarterbacks Charlie Hunt, left, and Reign St. Clair run through a drill during the Golden Bears' college football showcase May 5. The two are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job this fall.
Hunt and St. Clair were among almost 60 UA players who went through speed, agility and position-specific drills for, according to Buttermore, almost 125 college coaches.
UA was the fifth of 10 stops for Columbus College Football Day, which began at 6 a.m. at Pickerington North. Showcases began across central Ohio on May 3 and continue the rest of the week.
Just as college coaches are getting to know area players, St. Clair said he continues to do the same at UA.
“I had to set a first impression for myself [when I got here],” St. Clair said. “I hadn’t had to do that at a new school ever, so coming here and being able to talk to guys inside and outside schools, building relationships and knowing them, that’s the key.”
