Jordyn Tyson, the New Orleans Saints' first-round pick, missed the final day of rookie minicamp due to a planned rest day for injury prevention. He previously showed promise during the first practice but has a history of soft tissue injuries.
New Orleans Saints first-round pick Jordyn Tyson did not practice on the second and final day of this weekend's rookie minicamp due to a soft tissue issue, per Nick Underhill for NewOrleans.Football, but head coach Kellen Moore said it was a planned rest day as part of his injury prevention plan. Tyson was full-go on the first day of practices and looked the part of a game-changing talent, but durability was a question for him after injuries caused him to miss multiple games in each year of his college career.
Hopefully this was done more out of an abundance of caution than anything else. The season is a long ways away and there's no need for Tyson to push himself too soon. The Saints need him to be available in September and October. He does have a history of soft tissue injuries -- he missed three games with a hamstring issue last season -- so this could be part of it. The Saints overhauled their sports performance department last year by hiring Ted Rath and ranked among the fewest soft tissue injuries in the league, so they've earned some trust in managing things like sore hamstrings, calf muscle strains, and groin injuries.
At the same time, it's hard to not feel cynical about the pick given the Saints' history of injury-plagued first rounders. Marcus Davenport, Payton Turner, and Trevor Penning were all derided for missing a lot of games with injuries. Chris Olave has dealt with a series of concussions, too. Let's keep our fingers crossed that Tyson isn't going down the same path.
