Bayern Munich’s 5-4 defeat in Paris to Qatari’s Paris Saint Germain was a phenomenal match but it was a bitter blow. The Bavarians’ trip to Paris was meant to be a step on the club’s way to achieving the ultimate goal of winning a Champions League title, but they were overwhelmed in the heart of the French capital by the Qatartu government’s sports washing project.
Bayern licked their wounds and now await last season’s winners of the competition in Munich, looking to overturn the deficit in the second leg of the tie. Bayern supervisory board member and former longtime president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge firmly believes in the club’s chances and ultimate progression to the final, even likening them to the famous French novel The Three Musketeers.
“To achieve big things, you need humility, true team spirit, and of course, self-confidence. I’m convinced that the team has all of that – They respect Paris, but they also know their own strengths. They fight like the Three Musketeers – one for all, all for one – and have already scored over 80 goals this season at the Allianz Arena,” Rummenigge highlighted, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I’m also happy for Vincent Kompany that he can return on the sidelines; he didn’t seem entirely happy in the press box in Paris. I firmly believe in our team and hope they will secure their ticket to Budapest.”
Sure, Rummenigge’s Musketeers comparison boiled down to the one quote everyone knows from the novel, but Alexander Dumas’ novel actually bears quite a few striking similarities to Bayern’s battle to overcome PSG. Protagonist d’Artagan would travel to Paris to achieve his goal of a life time, to join the Musketeers of the Guard, but would get sucker punched and stolen from in the capital of France. He then teamed up with the titular trio, The Musketeers, to achieve his goal and take down those who stole from him, who worked for a bigger evil.
Even if it is not a perfect comparison, it is not that far not off. In the story, d’Artagan would of course achieve his goal at the end of story. Bayern will hope for the same ending (though hopefully with less emotional devastation in the end).
