Tyrese Maxey revealed that a finger injury affected his performance as the Philadelphia 76ers were swept by the New York Knicks in Round 2 of the playoffs. Maxey averaged 18.3 points with reduced shooting efficiency during the series.
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers are headed into the offseason following a 144-114 loss in Game 4 to the New York Knicks. The Sixers were swept out of Round 2 and will now head into the summer looking to find ways to improve.
If there was anybody on this roster who desperately needed a break, it was Tyrese Maxey. The star guard led the league in minutes at 38.0 per game while throwing this franchise on his back more often than not. He then averaged 39.7 minutes per game in the playoffs, including playing 47 minutes in Game 2 and 44 minutes in Game 3 against the Knicks.
With that being said, Maxey didn't look like himself in Round 2. He averaged 18.3 points while shooting just 43.3% from the floor and 15.8% from deep against the Knicks after averaging 26.9 points and shooting 41.8% from deep in Round 1 against the Boston Celtics. It was obvious the finger was bothering him, and he admitted it after the Game 2 loss to New York.
"Yeah, it actually got a little bit better after the play-in game," Maxey said. "I had a couple days to the play-in game, then I had a couple days to the Boston series, and when I was in the Boston series, I felt really good. I hadn't got hit anything. I hadn't got anything in a while."
Maxey shot a combined 3-for-19 from deep in the series as his finger was affected everything for him. He admitted he aggravated the injury late in the regular season as well.
"Game 2 (vs. Knicks), at the end of the second quarter, I got it caught in a jersey, and I fell on it, and I jammed it," he continued. "I'll say this, nobody’s gonna remember this, because it's regular season, but when I first came back, we played Charlotte, we played Miami, I didn't get hit at all. A couple games. We played a game here, our last game, I think, we played Detroit. I got it caught in a jersey. It took like, a week. So, like, that trip was in and . Like, it just hurt. It just hurts bad. It hurts, man."
Tyrese Maxey averaged 18.3 points while shooting 43.3% from the floor and 15.8% from three-point range against the Knicks.

Due to the pain in his finger, which is on his shooting hand, it hindered Maxey greatly to the point where he was struggling to produce. When considering the state of the roster, with Joel Embiid hobbled by his own injuries, Maxey had to produce and play. He knew it. He had to make sure he was out there for this group. Heading into the summer, he can now let the injury heal.
"That's kind of what I felt like the last couple games, last two games," he stated. "So, I'm just gonna give it the time where to heal. I know I gotta do some, like, hand therapy and different things like that. It’s on my shooting hands, so do whatever the doctors and them tell me to do. We'll follow up on that tomorrow, but it was no chance I was using that as an excuse of missing any part of this. I know during that time after when I hit the three-week mark, I was like I’m playing no matter what, I don't care what the consequences are. I wanted to help this team get into the playoffs, and we did that. We did that. We got into the playoffs, won a round."
As Maxey heads into the summer, he knows he is about to be a father and he can now focus on that, let his finger heal, and move forward.
"Listen, I'm just gonna be complete honest with y'all, I'm about to debrief by going back to the crib, and, you know, I'm blessed about to be a father," Maxey finished with his trademark smile. "So, I'm happy with that. I'm ready to go home and then just see how that's like. That's just, honestly, the facts of it. Hell a season, had a great time playing basketball, and now this just brings a life challenge that's going to be great."
