With the start of voluntary workouts underway, the Texans' social media team flashed a video of newly acquired running back David Montgomery going through drills. He was seen cutting between the pads and working upfield to the left before finally slowing down.
Here's the first look at the new No. 32 in Houston's backfield.
Acquired for a fourth-round pick from the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason, Montgomery plans on being the focal runner in place of former Pro Bowler Joe Mixon, who was released after missing all of last season with a foot injury. Earlier this offseason, Houston and Montgomery agreed to a revised contract worth $16..5 million over the next two seasons on a deal that includes a $6.5 million signing bonus.
An eight-year veteran, Montgomery plans to be the power back in Houston as part of a 1-2 punch with rookie Woody Marks. Over his past three seasons with the Lions, he served as the power to Jahymr Gibbs' speed, thus leading to the nicknames of "Sonic and Knuckles" by the fans at Ford Field.
“Houston was definitely the place that I wanted to go,” Montgomery said in March during a virtual press conference with the local media in Houston following the trade. “I was in Detroit, a very successful organization, and I practiced against Houston a couple of times and they’ve always been the hardest team to practice against.
"I want to come in and show these guys that I could hang with the big dawgs.”
