Dodgers arenât cashing in scoring chances, and arenât creating them either

NEW YORK â As disastrous as this first quarter of the season has been for the Mets, president of baseball operations David Stearns still believes this team can contend.
Speaking before Tuesday nightâs blowout win over the Tigers, Stearns referenced the talent sprinkled throughout this roster â the club he reconstructed this past winter â as the rationale for his unwavering faith. He likes the character of those in the room and trusts they will start playing to the numbers on the back of their baseball cards soon.
âWe have not shown that yet,â Stearns admitted, âbut I do believe that [we can go on a run].â
That doesnât mean Stearns isnât patrolling the trade market already, though. The search for upgrades outside of the organization is underway.
A.J. Ewingâs promotion â and the immediate spark he provided in his memorable debut against Detroit â could be the precursor to an external addition on the horizon.
âWe are always looking and always seeing if we can improve the team,â Stearns said. âAs all of you know, this isnât the most vibrant time of the year for external trades, but weâre going to be open minded and weâre certainly going to look to see if there are ways we can improve the team in constructive ways.â
Making this team better could also mean another promotion from within. Like Ewing, top prospects such as slugging first baseman Ryan Clifford, speedy outfielder Nick Morabito and right-handed starter Jack Wenninger are playing well in Triple-A Syracuse. Wenninger lowered his ERA on the season with Syracuse to 1.08 with five scoreless innings on Tuesday night and he hasnât given up a run in 16 2/3 frames.
Calling up more prospects will also happen, conversely, if the Metsâ season continues to go spiral. At a certain point, if the Mets donât climb their way out of this mess soon, it would be irresponsible not to transition the focus into next year and beyond. The Mets entered Tuesday with the worst record in baseball at 15-25.
David Stearns acknowledged the team's poor performance but believes they can still contend and expects them to improve.
Yes, David Stearns confirmed that the Mets are actively searching for trade upgrades to enhance their offense.
Stearns cited the talent on the roster and the character of the players as reasons for his belief that the team can turn things around.

Stearns was asked at the end of his presser how much longer he can focus solely on improving this roster instead of embracing the fact that this might not be the Metsâ year.

âWeâre not close to that point,â he said.
That means the message to Mets fans, at least for now, remains the same, just as it has been throughout this horrid start to the season.
âOur message to the fan base is we recognize that the first six weeks of this season havenât been close to good enough,â Stearns said. âWe understand that. Weâre disappointed in it. We also believe we have the talent on this team to turn this around and our focus is to do everything we can, every single day, to get it there.â
