Jeanie Buss gave a careful answer when asked about the possibility of a LeBron James statue outside the Los Angeles Lakersâ arena.
The question matters because Jamesâ Lakers legacy is entering a more complicated stage after another playoff exit. His place in NBA history is secure, but his place among the Lakersâ immortal figures still creates debate.
Buss did not shut the idea down. She simply made it clear that the Lakers have an order for these things, and James is not at that stage yet.

According to Joy of Everything on Instagram, Jeanie Buss was asked about a possible LeBron James statue and immediately pointed to the fact that he is still an active player.
âHe is still playing, we donât talk about statues till someone retires. He is playing great. The standard for having your jersey retired as a Laker is when a player is inducted into the Hall of Fame,â Buss said.
She added, âI have absolutely no doubt that LeBron will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame.â
That was a mild answer, but it still said plenty. Buss did not treat the statue idea as something ready for discussion right now.

Instead, she moved the conversation toward the Lakersâ established standard for honoring players. That matters because the franchise has never been casual about statues, jerseys, or permanent recognition.
James may still be playing at a high level, but the Lakers are not ready to discuss a statue while his career is still active.
Buss was much firmer when the conversation shifted from a statue to a retired jersey. That is where she left almost no room for doubt.
âWhen he does so, then we will retire his jersey. Knowing that he will make it into the Basketball Hall of Fame, he will have his Lakers jersey retired, no doubt about it,â Buss stated.
That distinction is important. Buss sounded cautious on the statue question, but completely clear about the jersey.
For the Lakers, Hall of Fame induction is the benchmark. James is one of the easiest future Hall of Fame calls in basketball history, so his jersey retirement feels inevitable.
The statue debate is different because it asks a bigger franchise question. Lakers statues are reserved for figures whose identities are deeply tied to the organization.
James brought a championship to Los Angeles and extended his historic career in purple and gold. But the Lakers will likely wait until retirement before deciding how far that legacy recognition should go.
For now, Bussâ message was simple. The jersey will happen, but the statue conversation can wait.
