Sioux Falls, Minnesota Vikings to start girls flag football program
The Sioux Falls School District has partnered with the Minnesota Vikings to bring girls flag football to the area in the fall of 2026.
Middle and high school students will be able to compete, with the program being offered at all four city high schools and Community Learning Center (CLC) middle schools ā Ben Reifel, Whittier and George McGovern.
The first season is scheduled for September 2026, with one to two practices per week and three Saturday events per month.
The program will be entirely funded by a grant from the Vikings, and it will cover all startup costs, coaches, uniforms and equipment.
"This partnership is about creating new opportunities for our students," Executive Director for CLCs Paul Keizer said in a press release from the school district. "We are grateful to the Minnesota Vikings for recognizing the potential here in Sioux Falls and helping us bring this experience to life. This program will open doors for more girls to get involved in athletics, build confidence and be a part of a team."
The pilot program will be focused on building interest, increasing participation and growing the game. The long-term goal is to have girls flag football sanctioned by the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA).
"Flag football is gaining momentum across the country, and it's essential that girls have structured, high-quality chances to get involved," said Brett Taber, vice president of social impact for the Minnesota Vikings, according to a release. "The launch of South Dakota's program represents a key move toward growing girls flag football in the region and creating a strong base for its continued development."
The program will be offered through the CLCs at all seven schools.
