The New Orleans Saints face a June 2 deadline to decide Alvin Kamara's future with the team. This date is crucial for potential trades, especially with the Denver Broncos showing interest.
Upcoming deadline may push Saints to make decision on Alvin Kamara
Could Alvin Kamara's time with the New Orleans Saints be coming to an end? June 2 looms large as a trigger date for the Saints to make a decision on his future with the team. For his part, Kamara has been nothing but welcoming to his new teammates on social media and during a candid interview with his old teammate Terron Armstead, but he's been conspicuously absent from voluntary workouts. That was routine for him when Sean Payton and Dennis Allen were coaching the team. After seeing him underwhelm in an injury-shortened 2025 season, Kellen Moore may not be as accepting of Kamara's choice to train away from the rest of the team.
So why is June 2 so important? That's when it's most feasible for the Saints to trade Kamara, if that's what they want to do. Teams can't designate trades as post-June 1 moves the way they can roster cuts, but waiting does allow them to spread out the dead money salary cap hits from a trade. Maybe the Denver Broncos are still interested. Albert Breer reported for Sports Illustrated that, "There were a lot of people who, back in March, believed Kamara would find his way to Sean Paytonβs Broncos." Denver extended veteran rusher J.K. Dobbins after a season-ending injury and drafted Jonah Coleman in the fourth round to pair with RJ Harvey, last year's second rounder, but their backfield committee isn't that convincing. The Broncos may be a team to watch if Kamara wants the Saints more badly than they want him.
June 2 is the deadline for the Saints to potentially trade Alvin Kamara, allowing them to manage salary cap implications.
The Denver Broncos have shown interest in Alvin Kamara, particularly due to their recent roster changes.

Kamara has appeared in 126 games during his NFL career -- all of them with the Saints. He has suited up for more games with one team than any other active running back. Fullbacks like C.J. Ham and Patrick Ricard (who followed John Harbaugh tot he New York Giants this offseason) have him beat, but he has an edge in snap counts. Kamara's 5,334 snaps on offense are almost as many as Ham and Ricard combined (5,702). How does he stack up among other running backs? Ameer Abdullah (154) is ahead of Derrick Henry (153) by a single game, but Abdullah has played for five different teams, while Henry is on his second stop. Aaron Jones (126) is tied with Kamara but he's also on his second team. No other running back has taken point for a single team as long as Kamara has. He's said before he would rather retire than play for another team, but if the Saints are ready to move on and Kamara isn't ready to quit playing, maybe he's changed his tune.
Even if Kamara does return for 2026 (Moore has carefully reminded everyone, repeatedly, that he's certainly under contract right now), he'll be taking a backseat to Travis Etienne Jr. That's something Kamara has said he's comfortable with, likening it to his relationship with Mark Ingram II back in the day, but the Saints may not be comfortable paying him what he's owed as their second-best running back. If Moore doesn't trust him on passing downs -- Kamara was pulled out of games in favor of Devin Neal after he struggled to pick up the blitz -- the Saints could be looking to move on, save some money, and get younger. It's been an odd situation all offseason. Hopefully it'll come to a resolution sooner rather than later.
